The fifth-grade teaching team this year includes Shanna Noonan, Ashleigh Kendal, Ryan Blundell, and Erin Van Winkle.  We are looking forward to a wonderful year full of collaboration and student engagement.

 

Curriculum and Units of Study:  For reading, we will be using our newly adopted curriculum called Wonders. This curriculum is aligned with the science of reading and will help students become critical readers, writers, communicators, and thinkers. Units of study in 5th grade ELA include: reading and responding to literature and informational text, writing narrative, argumentative, and expository essays, and understanding grammar, mechanics, and conventions of the English language.

For math, we will continue to use our Bridges curriculum. Units of study covered in 5th grade math include: operations and algebraic thinking, multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals, numbers and operations with fractions, measurement and data, and geometry concepts.

5.NBT.A

Number & Operations in Base Ten: Understand the place value system.

5.NBT.B

Number & Operations in Base Ten: Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

5.NF.A

Number & Operations—Fractions: Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.

5.MD.A

Measurement & Data: Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.

5.MD.B

Measurement & Data: Represent and interpret data.

Essential Standards: Reading

RW 5.2.1

Apply strategies to interpret and analyze various types of literary texts.

RW 5.2.2

Apply strategies to interpret and analyze various types of informational texts.

RW 5.2.3

Apply knowledge of word meanings (morphology) and word relationships to determine the meaning of unknown words in and out of context.

RW 5.3.1

Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information, for a variety of purposes and audiences. 

RW 5.3.4

Apply understanding of the conventions of Standard English grammar, usage, and mechanics to make meaning clear and to strengthen style.
